“There have recently been some news stories announcing a disease called Leptospirosis infecting a few dogs in the South Bristol area. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can cause serious, potentially fatal disease in both dogs and people where it is called Weil’s disease. It is usually contracted from dirty water contaminated by rat’s urine. The routine dog vaccination used by the VHC covers against this form of Leptospirosis but there are other types of this bacteria found around the world. In other EU countries there are also different Leptospira infections and new vaccines have been developed to protect against these other types. Currently in the UK the most important types of Leptospira are covered by the vaccine used by us. If you are travelling abroad, please contact us to determine if any additional vaccinations are indicated.
There is a possibility that some of the recent cases may have been caused by a new type of Leptospira and tests are being carried out to determine the exact type of bacteria.
When more information is available the Veterinary Health Centre will make a decision on which vaccination will be offered to our clients to ensure we offer the most appropriate vaccines and service. If you are concerned your dog may not be up to date with its vaccinations please contact us to arrange an appointment.”
